Zen and the Art of Ethical AI Maintenance

conversations creating a culture ethical ai use ethics foundational skills Sep 29, 2025

Over the weekend, I spent time with colleagues from across the state at a high school debate scrimmage. Between rounds, the conversation turned to AI — specifically, how we’re all handling it in our classrooms.

And let me tell you, the reactions were… spirited.

Many of my peers were firmly in the "no AI, no exceptions" camp. Their concerns are valid: that allowing AI use will erode foundational writing, thinking, and research skills.

I get it. I really do.

But I also wonder: what if there’s a way to integrate AI without subtracting from those basics? What if — like calculators, Google, or spell check before it — AI could support skill development without replacing it?

I’d argue yes.

Because let’s be honest — it’s getting harder and harder to tell which websites, tools, or content creators haven’t used AI in some capacity. This technology isn’t on the horizon anymore. It’s in the room.

When used sparingly and intentionally, AI isn’t inherently harmful. It’s not the villain in the story. The real danger is pretending it doesn’t exist, or worse — refusing to equip students with the discernment to use it wisely.

I’m not here to change anyone’s mind. I’ll never be the one wagging fingers or issuing mandates. But I will always advocate for moderation. For thoughtful integration. For teaching the habits that shape responsible use.

Because Pandora’s box isn’t just open — the contents are already being distributed in group chats and Chrome tabs.

At AI-Ready Teaching, we teach educators how to:

  • Lean in where it makes sense

  • Set boundaries that preserve real learning

  • Help students build healthy, ethical relationships with the tools they already have
